Bitcoin near $81,000 after a $635 million ETF outflow: Friday’s tape, not a Saturday price

The figure set for this note is Friday’s, not a weekend quote. CoinDesk had bitcoin around $81,000 to $81,500, US spot bitcoin ETFs with a $635 million outflow on Thursday, and an average ETF cost basis of $82,313.

Filed Saturday 24 October 2026. The bitcoin prices below come from CoinDesk’s Friday live blog. They are not a Saturday quote, and they are not an exchange settlement collected by this desk.

The range CoinDesk actually published#

Early Friday, CoinDesk had bitcoin near $81,500 after a dip to about $81,000 late on Thursday, in a range of less than $1,000 and down 0.4% over 24 hours. It also said bitcoin was still below $82,500, a level it had lost on Thursday. Later updates said bitcoin had turned lower and was back at $81,000, and the headline on the file remained that bitcoin was holding above $81,000.

That is a tight Friday range after a week CoinDesk described as full of $3,000 swings. It is not a close. Anyone republishing “bitcoin closed at $81,000” is adding a precision the live blog did not claim.

The flow is Thursday’s, and it has a source#

The completed digital-asset print in the file is the flow. CoinDesk reported that US-listed spot bitcoin ETFs had $635 million of outflows on Thursday, the largest daily outflow since 25 June, citing Farside Investors. Thursday was the same session as the Nasdaq’s 2.6% drop. The coincidence is real as a calendar fact. It is not, by itself, a measured beta.

CoinDesk added a historical reading from the same Farside record: on 22 earlier days with outflows above $300 million, bitcoin was on average lower 7, 30 and 90 days later. The outlet’s own caveat is part of the fact. The ETFs have existed for less than three years, and CoinDesk said the sample is likely skewed by the bear market that began in October 2025. Twenty-two days is not a law. Repeating the average without the caveat would misquote the source.

Cost basis is an average, not a floor#

CoinDesk, citing a Glassnode chart, said bitcoin was trading just above $81,000 against an average US spot-ETF cost basis of $82,313. The chart is the running average price at which bitcoin has flowed into those ETFs. Trading $1,000 under that average means the average entry, as Glassnode framed it, was higher than Friday’s spot. It does not locate any single fund’s break-even, and it does not say the average cannot fall if redemptions continue or rise if new creations come in above the spot.

The equity tape around that bitcoin range was the AI session already covered elsewhere: Thursday’s selloff, Friday’s attempt to steady, and oil as the other live input. CoinDesk noted the Fed meeting on 27–28 October as the nearby macro date. None of that converts $81,000 into a target.

One further CoinDesk line is a performance claim, not a flow: even including Thursday, bitcoin was up about 39% from just under $59,000 on 1 July. That is the outlet’s arithmetic over that window. This story does not extend it.

Informational. Not a recommendation to buy or sell bitcoin or any spot bitcoin ETF.

Frequently asked questions

Is $81,000 Friday’s closing price?

No. CoinDesk’s live blog described a range: near $81,500 early Friday, later dipping back to $81,000, and holding above $81,000 while the blog was being updated. A single official daily close is not what that file is.

Who calculated the $635 million?

CoinDesk attributed it to Farside Investors and described it as Thursday’s flow. This desk has not re-summed the ETF creations and redemptions.

Does trading under the ETF cost basis mean holders are underwater?

Only for the average entry CoinDesk attributed to Glassnode, $82,313. Individual funds and individual days differ. “Under the average” is not “every holder is at a loss”.
